South American instruments for tradional music of South America.


Flutes from the Andes, Latin American Indian harp, South American guitars and many other instruments from Latin America

Among the many instruments used by LOS KOYAS in its performances are the following:
  • Indian flutes (or flutes of the Andes, or Andean flutes), the best-known of which are the«kena» or«quena» and the«siku» (a sort of panpipes);
  • The Indian harp of Latin America, used mainly in Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico;
  • The «charango» (the best-known of the Indian guitars), a 10-string instrument typical of the music of the Andes and whose resonance chamber is an armadillo shell;
  • The «ronroco», an Indian guitar similar to the charango but larger, and the «walaycho», a small-sized charango;
  • The «cuatro» (Colombia / Venezuela) and the «cavaquinho» (Brasil), small 4-string guitars for accompanying tropical Latin American rhythms;
  • The guitar, for solo performance or used as an instrument for accompaniment in the style peculiar to the region evoked;
  • Latin American rhythm instruments: the «bombo» (often used for accompanying Indian flutes in music from the Andes), the best-known of which is the «bombo leguero» originally from Argentina; «maracas» (instruments paired with the «cuatro» to accompany the harp from the plains - «arpa llanera» - from Venezuela); the «guiro», the «guacharaca» and the «bongos», are among the key elements of tropical Latin American rhythms.
